Don’t tell anyone, but I was able to get my hands on the latest copy of Geode from the factory floor and took a quick video of how it looks! Mind you, it’s still being worked on, but I just couldn’t keep this kind of video to myself. I think it looks pretty cool, what do you think?

Geode Development Preview from No Name Industries on Vimeo.

Development is coming along as we’re getting ready for our big release. I want to thank everyone who has been sending me emails, I try my best to respond as quickly as possible during my breaks from the factory floor.

And don’t worry…there’s a lot more to come! :-)

  1. Wow, that is exactly what I was looking for in a caching app! Nice job, can’t wait for it’s release. Does Geode get the cache details live from geocaching.com or do you need to “sync” it first?

  2. Looks brilliant.

One feature request I would suggest is on the “Geocaching” page, to include distances for each cache from your current location (0.2 mi). Tho this would just be an added convenience since you can easily see this on the Map page.

Well done, can’t wait to try this.

  3. i mean “Geocaches” page

  4. rcp-bren,

That’s actually a feature we have planned. It didn’t make it into this demo video, but the hooks are in place to make that happen, and then sort the list by that distance.

  5. This looks like an awesome application. My partner and I cache using a Garmin 60C and a Nuvi 350, slicing and dicing pocket queries through Gecaching Swiss Army Knife. Although we can port all of the cache info to the Nuvi, having it live on the iPhone would be great. I’m especially impressed with the ability to wirelessly import .gpx files. I’m sure that you have a long line for beta testers, but if you’d like to add another, we have a few hundred caches under our belt, and a lot of experience with Cachemate, GSAK, and other paperless geocaching apps. We’d love to help this project along.

  6. The big question seems to be if this application is consuming an offline GPX (say, exported from GSAK or directly from GC) to render the cache descriptions or if it’s reliant on an online connection to GC.

If it’s the former (with the option for the latter), then consider this bought the minute it releases!

  7. lasagan,

The app syncs with a folder of GPX or LOC files via WiFi to your PC or Mac. After that, an internet connection is not required unless you want to access map data (which we are even working on a way to cache that offline). This means it will work on the iPod Touch as well (although without GPS capabilities).

Also, you will have the ability to manually enter cache information and store it. To aid in this we plan on having a web browser available in the application that will assist in recognizing coordinates on any website that you happen to be viewing. We will also have the ability to launch a browser to the original cache page on the website it was created on.

  8. Be careful about the scraping of coordinates from a website. I believe that Geopher got into a bit of hot water w/ Geocaching.com because the Terms of Service prohibit any kind of content scraping. They had to remove the feature from their product. I just don’t want to see anything come up that’d delay your release!!!

I’m very excited about this product. It will make life much easier as I currently carry my VistaHCX, iPhone, and my old windows mobile (for Cachemate).

Right now, I have my pocket queries email directly to a lone gmail account (this is the only thing that shows up in the account). It’d be neat if the app had a feature that allowed it to pull the query emails from the email account, and load the GPX zip files directly!

  9. Looks like a great app. Can’t wait for it to show up in the store.
    How about implementing Wherigo :D
iPhone should be great doing those caches.

Thanks for developing programs like these!

Eh, if you need any alpha or beta-testers…

  10. this looks amazing, when will it be ready?

  11. I am excited about this app. I hope it works as well as it appears on the video in the field.

    Great job.

You might consider a more generic GPS version, i.e., not so directed at geocaching. For example, the ability to create “targets” base on current location or by inserting coordinates. See GeoNiche for Palm.

  12. cannot wait for this app :-)
If the app cannot hook to the website it will be a real bummer as the functionality of iPhone will be the same or even less than of my Garmin…
The only thing I can think of is it to allow the app to get pocket queries from an email to make it possible to cache spontaniously on the spot without earlier preparation. There must be a way to make this app live to use web access and GPS at the same time… otherwise what’s the point?
    This app:
    http://www.geocachenavigator.com/
can get data from geocaching website, why other apps cannot? can you work out some agreement with geocaching? App working only for premium members or something?

  13. I am very excited about this app! Can’t wait till it is released, the video looks brill!

  14. Quick question, will this be released in the UK store or only the US store? (I will be very sad if it isn’t released in the UK store!!!)

  15. Hey everyone, thanks for all the comments! Hopefully I can answer everyone’s questions here…

Release date: We’re still aiming for the end of this month. We’re kicking around the idea of releasing the Geocache Companion as a pre-release of the full-fledged Geode. My question to everyone is: Is there an interest? The geocache companion would basically be the cache browser and organizer portion of Geode.

As for release market, we plan on giving it a world-wide release as the sport of Geocaching covers the entire globe.

As for accuracy, I have personally compared the iPhone 3G’s gps capabilities next to my personal GPSr (Magellan eXplorist 600) and found them to be near identical. We have already found geocaches using the iPhone only, so we’re pretty excited to see something like our phones to be just as capable as a handheld GPSr.

If I missed anyone, please let me know. I apologize for not responding as quickly as I could…things have been really busy here on the factory floor!

…one more thing: THANK YOU! You’re comments and interest keep us going here a No Name! :D

  16. “Geocache Companion… Is there an interest? ”

I’d say hell yes. I’m an iPod Touch owner and won’t ever use any of the GPSr functionality. I’d love to see a “Geode Lite” that just has the cache browser with the option to type in my current location to be able to find the closest caches. Please feel free to contact me if you need a beta tester for the lite version. I have two iPod Touch units to test with.

Thank you for the info, I can’t wait till the end of the month now!

  18. This sounds great. Do you have an e-mail list to keep people informed about the release date?

  19. Right now, we’re using Twitter to keep in touch with those interested.

    You can follow us @nonameind.

I’ve always been allergic to mailing lists (so is my spam filter), but if there is enough interest, I don’t see why we can’t do that.

  20. I’m primarily interested in the Geocache Companion functionality. I just need a replacement for Cachemate, right now.

  21. I am ready for this puppy! It looks great and can’t wait to get it on my phone so I can throw away my old Verizon 8100 series.

  22. The sooner you can get something into our hands to start playing with, the better, I say!

There is no “companion” capability today for the iPhone, so having that in advance of the navigation capability and any other cool bells and whistles would be very handy. Besides, many of us have seperate GPSr’s for caching already, so the addition of the navigation stuff as well as the location aware capabilities for sorting, etc. can wait a bit if necessary — right now the big issue as I see it is not being able to pull up the writeups while in the field.

I would love to eventually see a live connection to GC much like Geocache Navigator for logging from the field and pulling in cache writeups in real time, but I also understand why that’s not likely to happen since it appears GC and Trimble have an exclusive relationship going. I use this now on my Blackberry and it’s fantastic, but I could live without it particularly since there’s a monthly/annual subscription fee.

By using the offline GPX files, you clearly steer clear of any GC data use issues and provide us with what looks like it’s going to be an outstanding application.

Can’t wait … keep us apprised as to when it’s going to hit the app store.

  23. How about posting an update here for those of us that don’t Twitter? Thanks.

  24. just a thought from a usability point of view. If the app can only see offline data it would be great if it could connect to an email and download a pocket query from there. This way we would be able to use it with GC website (kind of). Lest say you are in new location and feel like geocaching. you can go to GC make a pockt query and get it delivered to your email from this point you need a computer to transfer it to the app. But the app could go and download it directly from the email making it possible to use just the phone. GSAK can do that.
